Design Ah! Exhibit

Sunday, April 19, 2020

A few months ago, the Sagawa Art Museum in Moriyama, Shiga was having a really interesting exhibition.

It was the Design Ah! Exhibition

According to its website, the exhibition is an extension of the NHK Educational TV program of the same name. The focus of both the TV program and the exhibit was to expand children's "design mind", which they defined as:
"the combination of sensibility and thinking to be aware of one's environment (LOOK), investigate what kinds of problems exist (THINK), and make a better situation (CREATE), using a diversity of expressions".

I'm always down to going to museums, so I was pretty excited. I went on a Sunday afternoon, and it was crazy crowded. I think the wait time before even going in was 90 minutes. I'm not going to lie, I was tempted to leave after hearing the wait time...but I made the long trip all the way to Moriyama, so I figured that it was just better to stay.

So I waited the 90 minutes. Thankfully, the exhibit was worth the wait. There was a lot of interesting things to see. The main place was the Observation room. This was where they had all these different things.

I thought this was really cute. You put in your name and it creates a face using the letters! It was available in both Japanese and English, but I think the limit was only 4 letters. I typed in Chris in hiragana and this was what I got~

This was really interesting. It was a big picture of a boy in a classroom, but there were a bunch of hiragana letters in the picture. At first I thought they were just randomly placed letters, but then I realized that the letters were matching where they were placed. So for example, on the teeth, all the letters are は(ha) which means teeth, on the nose, it's all はな(hana) which means nose. It was really fun to look at.

After the Observation Room, I went to the Imagination Room and the Immersion Room.

I really liked the Immersion Room! It was super cool~

I got a really nice spot in the back and got to take some really cool videos!

I think that was the last part part of the exhibition.

By the time I got back outside, it was around 6 and I got to see a really pretty sunset.

The exhibition is currently running in Nagasaki until June 14, 2020...though with the whole virus thing going on right now, I don't think it's open. After Nagasaki, it's set to open in Niigata and then Aichi. If you have a chance, I totally recommend that you go!

Check out their website for more information!
